How Schizophrenia is handled alongside substance use

Virtue is an addiction treatment provider, not a psychiatric hospital. Substance use disorder is the primary diagnosis we're built to treat, and mental health conditions are addressed concurrently when they co-occur, but only where that's clinically appropriate and safe for our level of care.

Schizophrenia and related conditions vary enormously depending on current stability and medication management. Active or unmedicated episodes typically require a higher level of psychiatric care than a residential addiction program provides. Rather than make a general claim about treating schizophrenia on this page, our admissions team gathers your specific history and reviews it directly with clinical leadership.

If we're able to safely treat you, you'll have a dedicated treatment team coordinating your care. If we're not, we'll tell you that directly and help you find a more appropriate level of psychiatric care, we'd rather be honest upfront than have you find out partway through admission.

    Important to know

Active psychosis and unmedicated schizophrenia require a higher level of psychiatric care than a residential addiction treatment program provides. Our admissions team screens for this directly and honestly during intake, if we're not equipped to treat you safely, we'll say so and help point you toward the right level of care.

    Do you treat schizophrenia?
Virtue is an addiction treatment center, not a psychiatric hospital. Substance use disorder is the primary diagnosis we're built to treat. Schizophrenia and related conditions can require a higher level of psychiatric care than a residential addiction program is equipped to provide, particularly during active or unmedicated episodes. Whether we can safely treat you depends entirely on your current stability and clinical history, which is why we review every case individually with our clinical leadership rather than making a blanket claim here.
What happens when I call to ask about this?
Admissions will ask directly about your diagnosis, current medications, and current stability, alongside your substance use history. That information gets reviewed with clinical leadership to determine whether our level of care is appropriate and safe for you. If it isn't, we'll tell you that directly and help you find a more appropriate level of psychiatric care.
    Is a call obligation-free?
Yes. Calling to ask questions doesn't commit you to anything, and being honest about your history helps us give you an accurate answer instead of a false one.
    Is treatment covered by insurance?
Where we are able to provide appropriate care, co-occurring disorder treatment is typically covered under the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, which requires most commercial insurance plans to cover mental health and substance use treatment at the same level as medical care. Most commercial and PPO plans cover it, though what yours covers depends on the plan and the level of care. Our admissions team verifies your specific benefits before you commit to anything.
